built 657 days ago
The Lindisfarne Gospels is now part of the collection of Sir Robert Cotton, (d. 1631), in the British Library in London, where it is seen by visitors from all over the world.

Received wisdom on the scholarship of the Lindisfarne Gospels is that it was made in Lindisfarne, which is a monastery in Northumbria on a tidal island called Holy Island off the north-east coast of England. It has been thought that it was made probably in 698 CE to celebrate the translation of the relics of St Cuthbert to the high altar at Lindisfarne. Cuthbert was the monastery's most prominent saint, who had died in 687.

The Lindisfarne Gospels contain the gospels of Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, concerning the life of Jesus. The book was produced for ceremonial use, as a representation of the splendour of God's word and the Christian religion. It would ... have been an important contribution to the cult of St Cuthbert, which turned Lindisfarne into a place of pilgrimage in the late 7th and 8th centuries.
