Gospels: Books
built 641 days ago
It's ostensibly written by Judas's son, Benjamin, and follows the style of the Gospels. Archer collaborated with a noted biblical scholar, Francis J. Moloney. While the bulk of the writing is Archer's, he "was steered throughout by Professor Moloney and has included nothing with which the professor disagreed," according to the book's publicists.

Macregol was illuminating his gospels at about the same time as the anonymous scribes of the Book of Kells. His script is similar to their scripts, one of which is featured on the back of the Irish five pound note but his illumination is not as elaborate. The cover and some pages are missing but the book is otherwise in good condition.

Canon tables are indexes that list passages where the same events appear in different Gospels. They often preceded the text in Gospel books and were sumptuously ornamented with the columns of numbers in canon tables neatly arranged within painted architectural structures. The exhibition contains an intricately decorated example from an Armenian Gospel book, the earliest known work of T'oros Roslin, the greatest master of medieval Armenian book illumination.
