Southern Gospel has ingrained itself in American culture in a similar manner, though its evolution is surprisingly analogous. Think of George Clooney crooning away in the hit movie "Oh Brother, Where art Thou?". The type of music he sings there is actually representative of one of the few musical genres that has maintained its popularity since the early days of sound recording. This type of music has its origins in a mixture of the slave spirituals of black gospel, and a more Puritan sound known as heart song. This acapella music, one of the few really acceptable in Puritan society, was commonly sung in praise of God and spirituality. Fast forward 150 years or so, and there's a new industry booming through the use of radio and recorded songs. Very quickly the easy, upbeat, and catchy sounds of quartet music gained prominence with listeners.

The modern Gospel is less than 50 years old. Origin Gospel music is from Africian Americans. At the beggining of 20th century was big social changes and black people from the south were starting to move to the other parts of United States of America. They bring with them ... Gospel music. The second stage of Gospel music is called Dorsey Era. After Second World War blacks started to purchase Gospel records.

Gospel singer, songwriter, guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe was the first great star of Gospel music, surfacing on the pop music charts in 1938. She remained popular through the 1940s, continuing to hit the charts and drawing tens of thousands of fans to see her perform live in venues across the United States. She lost the support of some of her church fans, now and then, when she performed in secular venues as well, as when she recorded songs not recognized as 'Christian'. The fans she lost were somewhat forgiving, as she remained true to her faith, for the most part, throughout her recording career which spanned the remainder of her life.

Contemporary Gospel music was developed in the 1930's. Thomas Dorsey contributed greatly, merging lyrics of praise and emotion with contemporary music. He is known as the "Father of the Contemporary Gospel" and the 30's are referred to as his era. However, the American church never accepted this style, believing it to be a commercial enterprise. During the 1950s, noted artists and performers like Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward Jordanaires, The Golden Gate Quartet, Al Green, The Staple Singers of Chicago, Solomon Burke, Yolanda Adams, Albertina Walker, and others contributed to Gospel music.

You can get some gospel songs lyrics with mp3 songs from major commercial music services. The only problem is that you won't get a lot of the stuff by older, more established acts. Let's face it, the music industry is driven by what is new, hip and youthful. This applies to all genres including gospel music.
