Gorillaz - Gorillaz Gorillaz is a virtual band created in 1998 by Damon Albarn of Britpop band Blur, and Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl. The band ... includes former members Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz of The Talking Heads. The band is composed of four animated band members: 2-D (vocals, keyboard), Murdoc Niccals (bass), Noodle (guitar, vocals) and Russel Hobbs (drums). These characters are fictional and are not alter-egos of real people, as it is often mistaken.

Gorillaz (left to right): Russel (back), Noodle, 2D and Murdoc The story of Gorillaz begins on 15 August 1997. Stu-Pot was a not-so-bright but all-around great guy who led a somewhat unremarkable and uneventful life. A keyboard enthusiast, he worked as the star employee of Uncle Norm's Organ Emporium. Hoodlum Murdoc Niccals decided to ramraid Uncle Norm's Organ Emporium to procure synthesizer equipment in order to establish a "chart topping" musical group. However, Murdoc ended up driving his Vauxhall Astra through the building and directly into Stu-Pot, permanently damaging ("fracturing") Stu-Pot's left eye and putting him into a catatonic state. Murdoc was sentenced to "30,000 hours of community service, plus 10 hours every week of caring for the vegetabilised Stu-Pot". Not long after, Murdoc again injured Stu-Pot in a car accident in Nottingham's Tesco car park when attempting a 360°, which permanently damaged Stu-Pot's right eye, but revived him from his coma.
Film project to be the cartoon's swansong Damon Albarn has confirmed that Gorillaz will release no more studio albums. The Blur singer said that the only project left for the cartoon band will be a film featuring a score composition, that has previously been linked to filmmaker and 'Monty Python' mastermind Terry Gilliam. Speaking to BBC Radio 2, Albarn said: "We're trying to make a film next, starting in September hopefully. It will be a film score. MORE

Two new sets of Gorillaz vinyl figure were released in 2006. The CMYK set was released on October 26, 2006 on Kidrobot and the White edition set were released on November 2 on Gorillaz.com and Play.com. Gorillaz has been called the "first virtual hip-hop group" by Rolling Stone magazine. The band's cartoon characters perform tunes by a posse of real-life musicians, including Damon Albarn of Blur, former Talking Heads Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, mixmaster Kid Koala and others; the band's look was created by Tank Girl comic artist Jamie Hewlett. The group debuted in late 2000; its 2001 single "Clint Eastwood" (named for the popular movie cowboy) put them in the public eye. The tune was named best song at the 2001 MTV Europe awards. The second Gorillaz album, released in 2005, fared well ... and included the hits "Dare" and "Feel Good, Inc.," the latter earning a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year.
