1. Gorillas -- Eastern Gorillas
   Gorillas are currently divided into two species, the western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) and the eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei). Reliable abundance estimates are not available for the two species, but eastern gorillas probably number in the mid thousands while western gorillas number in the tens of thousands. Habitat loss is the greatest threat to eastern gorillas but a relatively minor threat to western gorillas. Eastern gorillas are ... threatened by illegal hunting but to a lesser extent than western gorillas. Only western gorillas and common chimpanzees are currently threatened by Ebola.
2. Gorillas -- Wild
   Gorillas may live about 35 years in the wild, and up to 54 in zoos. Gorillas live in groups. Each group usually contains one or more silverbacks and two to ten females and young. This interesting web page features information on gorilla behavior, reproduction and distribution.

   Gorillas have stocky builds with broad, shallow chests, short trunks, and arms longer than legs. Gorillas emit more than 15 recognized vocalizations. Sounds are used primarily for group communication because gorillas are almost invisible to one another when traveling and feeding in dense forest vegetation. Facial expressions for communicating include lip-pursing (tension), protruding tongue (uncertainty or concentration), and yawning (stress).
4. Dian Fossey -- Gorillas
   A Kentucky woman, Dian Fossey is inspired by famed anthropologist Louis Leakey to devote her life to the study of primates. Travelling into deepest Africa, Fossey becomes fascinated with the lives and habits of the rare mountain gorillas of the Rwandan wilderness. Studying them at close quarters, Fossey develops a means of communicating with the gorillas, and in doing so becomes obsessed with the apes' well-being. She becomes so preoccupied with her vocation that she loses the opportunity of a romance with the National Geographic photographer Bob Campbell.
5. Gorillas -- Western Africa
   Gorillas are large, quiet, gentle apes that can be found in Africa. Although gorillas are sometimes portrayed as out of control, they are in fact vegetarians. Because of unbelievable reduction in habitat, these beautiful primates are in great danger of going extinct.
6. Dian Fossey
   After spending 22 years studying mountain gorilla behavior, where she found the animals gentle and sociable, Dian Fossey was found murdered in her campsite. The tragic crime has still not been solved. Many people think Fossey was killed because she spoke out against poachers, the people who kill animals illegally. The Digit Fund was renamed the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in her honor. Dian Fossey's great legacy is that mountain gorillas became protected by the government of Rwanda and the important work she began many years ago continues on today.

10. Apes -- Humans
    Planet of the Apes - Highly evolved society of talking apes on the sci-fi adventure PLANET OF THE APES/CBS/1974. When a time-warping spaceship carrying astronauts Alan Virdon (Ron Harper) and Pete Burke (James Naughton) from the year 1988 landed on this futuristic landscape of A.D. 3085, a chimpanzee named Galen befriended and protected the astronauts from enslavement by his fellow creatures who saw "man" as an evil threat to their current world. He later fled with the earthmen after accidentally killing an ape leader who was trying to kill the astronauts. At this point the program became a futuristic version of THE FUGITIVE with a group of angry apes in hot pursuit espousing the sentiments "The only good human is a dead human." Galen (played by Roddy McDowall) spoke the English language and walked upright as did the rest of his simian kind (an atomic holocaust destroyed most of mankind but evolved the apes on planet Earth to a higher form of life). Other monkey character included Urko the ape (Mark Lenard), a military leader and Zaius (Booth Colman), an orangutan politician. The TV series is based on the novel Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle which spawned the motion picture Planet of the Apes (1968) starring Charlton Heston (on which the TV series is based), the sequels Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1969), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) as well as the animated Saturday morning cartoon RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES/NBC/1975-76 and the remake motion picture Planet of the Apes (2001) starring Mark Wahlberg.
