On the evening of the city-wide blackout in San Francisco, Gordon Getty had his 70th birthday party. It was a Hollywood theme costume party. Getty happens to live high on a hill that was one of the few spots where power was on.

Mark Getty, with his uncle Gordon Getty, has given £10 million to the National Gallery, London. Mark is the creator of Getty Images, one of the world’s major digital archives. He is one of two sons of Sir Paul Getty’s first marriage. The fund will cover the majority of the cost of re-designed public spaces, new cafes and facilities, and improved street level access from the soon to be fully pedestrianised Trafalgar Square to the north. The Getty funding carries with it the request that the Getty name will be clearly and prominently displayed in future, Sainsbury-wise. This is highly overdue, given the original £50 million bequest in l985 by Sir Paul Getty.
Gordon Getty, a scion of the Getty fortune and the single biggest patron of classical-music organizations in the country, has described himself as a contemporary composer working in a 19th century idiom. He makes no claims to any kind of intellectualism and desires to "touch the heart" with the same directness as a film score. At first glance, this is not an altogether misguided way of approaching an opera based on a work of Shakespeare. Both opera and the plays of Shakespeare have suffered the same fate in contemporary culture: becoming rarefied out of their original context and relegated to the hallowed summits of high art. Both were originally far more populist forms, seen and appreciated by a wide audience. A desire to address that, to create an opera with the same musical accessibility for a modern audience as a film score, is an interesting notion.
Spring Season 2007. Plump Jack, Gordon Getty and OSSLA With the assistance of the Sinaloa Symphony under the baton of Gordon Campbell, the Spring Season will bring two world premieres to Mazatlan: "Plump Jack" by Gordon Getty and "Danza Inan-na" by Hector Ramos. Based on the Shakespearean classics "Henry IV" and "Henry V," this opera in concert will be presented in its complete form with Gordon Getty present for the rehearsals and the performance. The work titled "Danza Inan-na" will, by contrast, be part of a program that ... includes the Concierto for Trumpet by Alexander Arturian and "Sheharazade" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Getty Images stockholders will receive $34 in cash for each outstanding share of common stock they own. The price represents a premium of 55 percent over the closing price Jan. 18, the last trading day before the company said it was considering a sale.

Taking a chance with ReFlow may require an open and inquisitive mind -- much like Getty's. Colleagues marvel at his curiosity and penchant for self-instruction. When Getty first got interested in mutual funds in the early 1990s, he wrote a paper for the Brookings Institution in which he argued that inflation could be licked by replacing national currencies with mutual funds. The idea drew interest from several academics, including Nobel economics laureate Franco Modigliani. A more recent example: When he was setting up ReFlow, Getty couldn't find a computer programmer to write a program he wanted in Java. So he taught himself the language over the weekend and showed up on Monday with a rudimentary version of the program.
