When you don't know how Google recognizes the source name, you can check by going to the Google News advanced search and putting in a keyword and then putting in the name of the search source. On the results page, the query box will contain your query word and the appropriate source: syntax for your search.
Mountain View-based Google considers the advanced search feature, announced Monday, to be the most visible change to its news section since introducing the service last year. Google's online newsstand covers 4,500 English language sources, up from about 4,000 sources 10 months ago.

Google's decision to index the full text of news sources rather than simply scraping headlines posed a major challenge for implementing the new service. The vast diversity and typically cluttered design of most online news formats is more difficult to crawl and index than many other types of web sites. "Article extraction has proven to be one of the most difficult aspects of the project," said Mayer.
The popular search engine Google made a splash earlier this week when it introduced a revised version of its Google News service. The new version (still in beta) is a significant advancement over the previous one -- culling news from 4,000 sources on the Web, up from 150 previously, and updating news every 15 minutes, instead of once or twice an hour.

FYI Gerry: Many of the sources tagged with “(subscription)” allow direct access to their news articles from Google News. If you try to access the same news article from the front page of that newspaper you usually find that you’re required to subscribe.
