In March 2005 attention was called to Google's inclusion of the white supremacist 'National Vanguard' magazine, and the resulting controversy forced Google News to remove the site from its service. In another case, Google was criticized for not including sources which are censored in China. On September 27, 2004, on the official Google Blog, the Google Team wrote: "For users inside the People's Republic of China, we have chosen not to include sources that are inaccessible from within that country." Google now places specific IP Addresses from China on a blacklist and prevents them from being indexed.

OJR: You ... have another issue where people in the journalism industry seem to go on the defensive when it comes to Google News. When a picture is mismatched or a press release is at the top of the page, people seem to take a sort of delight in Google News being wrong. Especially if they're in the business, they like to say, "See, you can't replace a human editor."

Outside "planet geek" users have been known only to check Google News on their work PC and not to realize or care if the settings didn't propagate. Perhaps people want to see biz/tech oriented news at work and entertainment/offbeat news at home.

Internetnews.com has learned that Google is in the process of removing National Vanguard content from its Google News service. National Vanguard is a publication of the National Alliance, which describes itself as an "organization for people of European descent."
