Good Charlotte Picture Pop-punk or post-punk band Good Charlotte was formed in 1996 by twins Joel Madden and Benji Madden. Both of them were born on March 11, 1979, in the town of Waldorf, Maryland. Happened by chance, the twin brothers, who never sang or played an instrument in their lives, were instantly inspired to form a band after seeing the Beastie Boys on their 1995 Ill Communication tour. Thus, they soon formed Good Charlotte with their high school friends Paul Thomas and Aaron Escolopio. When the band was first formed, Joel was on vocal, Benji was on guitar, Paul on bass, and Aaron on drums. All of them soon moved to Annapolis and met Billy Martin through a mutual interest in the band Silverchair.

Good Charlotte Takes on KFC This isn't the first time that members of Good Charlotte have lent their support to help animals. They contributed a track to PETA's Liberation CD, along with fellow animal advocates Goldfinger, The Used, Midtown, NOFX, Story of the Year, Anti-Flag, Propaghandi, The Desaparecidos, Good Riddance, Hot Water Music … the list is never-ending. Knee-jerk critical reaction to Good Charlotte would have you believe the band is the spawn of Satan himself, or at least the product of market forces and MTV. And there's a lot to revile about a group so hopelessly uncool it makes the Fray seem like the Fiery Furnaces. But over the course of four albums, the Maryland quintet has given credible voice to the sucking vortex of suburban angst and ennui.

When they started off in Maryland in 1996, Good Charlotte could barely play three chords. Twin brothers Joel (vocals) and Benji (guitar) embraced music as an outlet for familial issues-induced stress, leaving their prior endeavors (namely, baseball) behind. After adding high school friends Paul (bass) and Aaron (drums) to the lineup, the group relocated to Annapolis Maryland and played every venue in every town that would have them. After adding Billy (guitar) to the group, they began opening for bands like Bad Religion and Blink 182 and Lit, and eventually played at WHFS’s HFStival before being signed to Epic and releasing their eponymous debut in 2000. Young and the Hopeless was released in 2002.

Good Charlotte Although the band hailed from the suburban town of Waldorf, MA, Good Charlotte quickly made a name for itself in nearby Washington, D.C., playing the WHFS annual rock show HFSFestival in 1998 and 1999. A year later, the band issued its spunky self-titled debut on Epic, and the single "Little Things" made minor waves. The Madden brothers scored a gig as MTV VJs and soon were all over the network's late-night rock show All Things Rock, which gave their band's profile a boost. The two spent time behind the scenes writing songs for their sophomore album, but Escolopio left the group to join his brother in Wakefield before recording could commence. Josh Freese was quickly enlisted as the band's temporary drummer (Chris Wilson would later replace him permanently). By the fall of 2002, Good Charlotte was ready to release The Young and the Hopeless, and their expanded audience was ready.
