After breaking into the mainstream by playfully criticizing it, Good Charlotte has had a bit of time to actually enjoy the lifestyles of the rich and the famous. But the vacation is over, as the post-grunge group — fronted by identical twins Joel and Benji Madden — is back at work, now that the Maryland quartet has added the final touches to its upcoming album.

With the arrival of its fourth LP, Good Charlotte, the band that made its name decrying "the rich and the famous," are absurdly rich and famous. But you know what they say: Mo' money, mo' problems. "Keep your hands off my girl," warns Joel on the band's flirtation with electro-industrial. "The River" is as ginormously hook-riddled as anything they've written, and "Beautiful Place" may be the first pop-punk song to feature a slide guitar. The latter tune is a pleasant departure, but for the most part it's business as usual for this post-millennial answer to the Knack.

Good Charlotte straddles the line. The Madden brothers have all the requisite rocker markings: they sport multiple tattoos and piercings, they dress in all black, they chain smoke Camels; but their music and unfailing politeness give away their pop leanings. "You couldn't really put us in a category right now, we're kind of out there on our own," says Joel.

Joel Madden made gossip headlines outside of Good Charlotte with his 2 1/2 year relationship with singer Hilary Duff. The pair split in November, 2006. Some speculated that part of the reason was the age difference between the two. Hilary was 19 at the time of the breakup and Joel was 27. Benji Madden was engaged to Australian pop singer and actress Sophie Monk on December 24, 2006.

Twin brothers Benji and Joel Madden formed the punk-pop group Good Charlotte in Maryland in 1996. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2000, earned them a place on the teenybopper punk circuit alongside Sum 41 and Blink-182. Benji and Joel appeared regularly as hosts on the MTV show All Things Rock. In 2002 they released their second album, The Young and the Hopeless, which went to No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart.
