Gonorrhea: Women
built 634 days ago
Gonorrhea is not as common among women as men, and often causes no symptoms or only vague changes in the body. It can easily be treated. A gonorrhea infection of the cervix during pregnancy can be very serious (link to How Do You Get It). Some women have burning on urination that may not be related to bladder or kidney infection and can be associated with Gonorrhea or Chlamydia. This is known as Urethral syndrome.

Gonorrhea and chlamydia are sexually transmitted bacteria that affect both men and women. This, in turn, can cause infertility, tubal pregnancy, and chronic pain.

Gonorrhea can cause a pregnant woman to go into labor early or deliver a low-birth weight baby. Gonorrhea can spread from mother to baby during birth and cause a serious infection in the baby’s eyes that may lead to blindness. A pregnant woman can be treated to prevent transmission to the baby. All pregnant women should be tested for gonorrhea, even if they don't seem to be at risk.

Gonorrhea is diagnosed by observing symptoms and by taking a thorough history of sexual activity. In men, a sample of the discharge is cultured and examined microscopically to confirm the presence of the bacteria (gonococci); infection can usually be diagnosed immediately. In women, a sample of the discharge is usually taken from the cervix, and the culture may require incubation for 2 days before an accurate diagnosis can be made.
