Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection. A person can become infected when the bacteria enter any opening in the body, including the penis, anus, vagina, or mouth. The most common site of infection in women is the cervix, the opening from the vagina to the womb. In men, the infection most often starts in the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside the body.

Gonorrhea is a very common infectious disease. In the U.S. each year, about 700,000 people are infected with gonorrhea, and about 75% of all reported gonorrhea is found in younger persons aged 15 to 29. The highest rates of infection are usually found in 15- to 19-year-old women and 20- to 24-year-old men.

Gonorrhea infection may occur in the rectum, penis, cervix or throat. Both men and women may have no symptoms, and sometimes a woman's symptoms may be mistaken for a bladder or urinary tract infection. Remember, infected people who have no visible symptoms can still transmit the infection to others. For those who do have symptoms, they usually appear within two to seven days of infection, but this can take up to 30 days. Throat infections may cause a sore throat, though symptoms are rare.

This complication is rare because newborn babies receive eye medicine to prevent infection. When the infection occurs in the genital tract, mouth, or rectum of a child, it is due most commonly to sexual abuse.
