Gonorrhea is one of the most common and oldest known sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It causes urethritis, cervicitis, epididymitis, pharyngitis, proctitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and can spread throughout the body to cause both localized and disseminated disease. Most commonly, the term gonorrhea refers to urethritis and/or cervicitis in a sexually active person.

Gonorrhea ([G]onorrhoea in British English) is amongst the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the world and is caused by Gram-negative bacterium Neisseria gonorrheae. The term comes from Greek γονόρροια (gonórrhoia), literally "flow of seed"; in ancient times it was incorrectly believed that the pus discharge associated with the disease contained semen.[1]

Gonorrhea can spread to other reproductive organs, including the uterus and Fallopian tubes, and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can cause infertility and tubal pregnancies (which can lead to death of the mother and the unborn child).
