Gollum: Ruling Ring
built 276 days ago
In Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy, Gollum is a CGI character voiced by actor Andy Serkis, who ... provided the voices of some of the Nazgûl and orcs. Barely glimpsed in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), he becomes a central character in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). The CGI character was built around Serkis' facial features, voice and acting choices. Possibly, Andy Serkis based his voice on the character Gurgi's voice from the Disney movie, The Black Cauldron

Gollum is a hideous, wheezing creature, and something moviegoers have never seen before. According to WETA Digital, the special effects house that helped create the "Rings" trilogy, this is the first film that has fused live action and animation together so extensively. After essentially building a new computer program to create Gollum, the result is a lifelike creature that doesn't look computer generated.

Frodo, Sam, and Gollum left Faramir and began crossing the pass of Cirith Ungol in the border-mountains of the Ephel Dúath. Gollum visited the great spider Shelob, child of Ungoliant, because he was planning to betray the Hobbits to her and then get the Ring for himself. When he returned the Hobbits were asleep. The sight of Frodo sleeping nearly moved Gollum to repent. However, Sam woke up and spoke harshly to Gollum, and all hope of redemption was lost. Gollum followed through with his plan and led Frodo and Sam into Shelob's lair.

When the Black Gate was reached and found to be well guarded, Gollum convinced them not to go that way, saying that they would be caught and Sauron would regain the Ring. Gollum led them through Ithilien to Cirith Ungol, where he knew of another entrance into Mordor. In the border-mountains of the Ephel Dúath, Gollum betrayed his companions to the great spider Shelob, child of Ungoliant. Just as Frodo warned him, Gollum's betrayal of his oath ultimately led to his undoing, for Frodo and Sam escaped from Shelob's lair and came against all odds to the volcano of Orodruin or Mount Doom. Gollum followed them all the way, seeking a chance to surprise them and take the Ring. When Frodo and Sam had almost reached their destination, he attacked, but failed to get the Ring.

Gollum was eventually captured and brought to Barad-dur where he was questioned and tortured. Sauron wanted to extract information from him about what had become of the Ring. But Gollum was tougher than Sauron expected, both because of his Hobbit roots and because Gollum's own need for the Ring was so strong that he did not want Sauron to find it. Eventually under extreme duress, Gollum revealed the names Baggins and Shire, but he led his captors to believe that the Shire was in the Vales of the Anduin where he had once lived rather than across the Misty Mountains in Eriador. Sauron allowed Gollum to escape because he wanted Gollum to lead him to the one who bore the Ring.

As Gandalf explained in The Fellowship of the Ring, Gollum left the Mountains and pursued Bilbo a few years later, but the trail was cold. He made his way to the edge of Mordor, where he met the monstrous spider Shelob and became her spy, worshipping her and bringing her food. He was eventually captured by Sauron's forces and tortured, but he revealed only the words 'Baggins' and 'Shire'. His testimony alerted the Dark Lord of Mordor to the existence and significance of Hobbits in general and the Baggins family in particular. He was freed, but was soon caught by Gandalf and Aragorn, who interrogated him about the Ring and placed him in the care of the Wood Elves of Mirkwood. He escaped custody and descended into Moria, possibly trying to get through the mountains to the Shire..
