Golden Sun: Games

Golden Sun is the latest creation from Camelot Software Planning. Fans of RPGs will no doubt recognize that Camelot was ... responsible for the popular Shining Force strategy RPGs that appeared on the Sega Genesis system. This previous experience with the form pays off in spades during Golden Sun—a game that is incredibly well designed and conceived.

One of Golden Sun's biggest strengths lies in its combat engine. Taking a page almost directly from a Shining Force game, Golden Sun features turn-based combat with an icon-based menu system. Characters will have access to physical attacks, a power called psyenergy that basically works like magic, and elemental creatures called djinn, which can be used to attack enemies or summon spirits in battle. The pace of combat is usually quick and is sometimes challenging as you try to find the best combination of physical and psyenergy attacks to take out enemies in your way. The only blemish on the sterling setup is the inability of members in your party to target another enemy if their intended target has been killed before their turn to attack comes up.

Unlike any other RPG, the items in Golden Sun actually maintain some use. These range from the many powerful healing items (the only way to recover health in the game) to the charge items that have a random amount of uses before they break. The amazing level of power that these items held with almost no repercussions was instantly praised for its ingenuity.

Golden Sun 3 is the common name for a hypothetical third game in the series, taking place after Golden Sun: The Lost Age. Ever since the second game's release, fans have speculated nearly unwaveringly on when a third game in would come out and for what system, what new gameplay features would be featured, and most of all, the story and what happens to the characters. As of October 2007, there is still no confirmation that a new game in the series is actually in the development stages, as Camelot has only confirmed long back that they are making a new RPG for the Wii. Whether or not this is a new Golden Sun game is purely speculation.

The main story-line of Golden Sun centres around Isaac's quest to stop a group of thieves from lighting the four elemental lighthouses. Throughout his journey, Isaac meets new friends and gains new powers, making his party stronger. Golden Sun is unique among Game Boy RPGs in that there are complex character histories for every major character in the game and hidden connections between almost everything.
