In the fall of 1970, Mrs. Meir met with U.S. President Richard Nixon, strengthening friendly relations with the United States—a crucial element to success in the Yom Kippur War. The United States would later send airlifts of vitally needed supplies to bolster Israeli forces. Mrs. Meir prepared a "shopping list" of military items on the way to her American visit to make clear the needs of her nation and identify the absolute necessities for survival.

Meir presided over a handful of people and Thatcher, considering the commonwealth as on its own, presided over a small country. Actually, neither woman had any options other than the ones exercised and no leverage worldwide. This is not the case with the United States, upon which entire continents of nations depend for stability throughout the world, notwithstanding the whining of congressional democrats about the disfavor in which this country is held worldwide. In any case, a commander-in-chief who is loved by the world is probably in the wrong line of work.

In 1934, when Meir returned from the United States, she joined the Executive Committee of the Histadrut and moved up the ranks to become head of its Political Department. This appointment was important training for her future role in Israeli leadership.[6]
