In 1948, David Ben-Gurion appointed Golda as a member of the Provisional Government. In a very dangerous but important mission, Ben-Gurion had Golda visit King Abdullah of Jordan to attempt to persuade him not to attack Israel after the departure of the British in May. As it would happen, King Abdullah had decided that his Army would attack in the war that led to Israel's independence.

At the age of 14, Golda wanted to be a school teacher, but at that time school teachers could not be married. Golda's parents wanted her to quit school and get married, but Golda wanted to be somebody. With the help of her sister Sheyna, who had married and moved to Denver, Colorado, Golda ran away.

"Golda's Balcony" was written by William Gibson -- Meir allowed him to follow her around in the '70s as her personal playwright because she liked his award-winning play "The Miracle Worker," about Helen Keller. The result was "Golda," an entirely different play from which the current solo show has been adapted. "Golda" had a short Broadway run in 1977 with Anne Bancroft heading up a cast of two dozen, but that version was less well received, particularly by Meir.
