Located on the top of Mount Benei-Rasan in the Golan Heights in Israel this wind turbine farm has been functioning since the summer of 1993. A total of ten turbines convert wind power to electricity. Each tower is 30 meters tall with a "wing span" (diameter of the blades) of 36 meters. The electricity produced here is transported through underground cables to the national network. The wind farm's average output is 15 million kilowatt/hours, enough for the domestic needs of about 20,000 people.
Golan Fence (c) Goehner The Golan Heights has been an Israeli occupied area of Syria since the Six-Day War of 1967. Up to that time, Syria had launched attacks on towns and villages in Israel near the Sea of Galilee from the high vantage point. Syria attempted to regain the control of the Golan Heights during a surprise attack with Egypt's help in 1973. Although Israel suffered heavy casualties, the Arab forces were defeated during the Yom Kippur War.

In the short-term, full Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights will have a high positive effect on deterring the prospects of war. Return of the Golan Heights to Syria will fulfill one of Syria's primary short-term strategic objectives. It will resolve an issue of national importance to the ruling Syrian regime and restore a vestige of Syrian pride. Additionally, assuming that any treaty will be coupled with an economic aid package, Syria will have a huge financial incentive to restrain from military action. Syria will be able to focus on continuing the modernization of its military, and consolidating its control over Lebanon.

In April 1967, after Syria heavily shelled Israeli villages from the Golan Heights, Israel and Syria engaged in aerial clashes. Israel shot down six of Syria’s MiG fighter planes, which were given by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Israel warned Syria against future attacks, and both the Syrians and Soviets were alarmed by the warning. Syria appealed to Nasser for backing, and in mid-May the Egyptian army moved 100,000 troops and 1000 tanks into the Sinai Peninsula on Israel’s southern border. The United Nations (UN) had earlier stationed forces in the area as observers, but on May 17, Nasser called for the removal of UN personnel from several locations. Within days, all of the observers were removed.

View from Golan Heights The area of the Shaaba Farms, adjacent to the Golan Heights, has become a hot-spot of attacks from Lebanon, as Syrian-backed Hezbollah forces keep pressure on Israel. Syria supports Lebanon's claim to Shebaa Farms, although Israel, which maintains a troop presence there, says it is part of the Golan Heights seized from Syria in 1967. Apparently Syria is using the Hezbollah as a proxy force to engage Israel militarily, which Syria has been unwilling to do directly. In addition to its strong influence inside Lebanon and with the Hezbollah, Syria allegedly provides transit for Hezbollah guerrillas and for weapons from Iran directed to Hezbollah and Palestinian Arab forces. Israel has attacked Syrian installations in response to Hezbollah actions to demonstrate that Israel understands the linkage.
