Since Akira Toriyama does not consider what is to come in proceeding chapters of his stories,[4] Goku's story develops into one that is not typical of other superheroes in media. Much of these reasons come from the simple fact that Dragon Ball was originally intended to be an adventure, and not a series that primarily focused on martial arts. Since Goku's character was originally inspired from a fictional monkey king named Sun Wukong ("Son Goku" in Japanese), he originally appeared in the series with traits that mimcked the character, like dark hair, a lean build, and a monkey tail. As the series developed, these physical traits are later explained to be typical of all Saiyans. As Dragon Ball departed its parody of Journey to the West, Goku's tail is removed permanently by Kami.

After Goku returns home, he is met by another Super Saiyan from the future named Trunks. Trunks informs Goku of a bleak future for Earth, where two very powerful androids (Jinzo'ningen) are terrorizing his world. Trunks ... reveals that everyone who could fight for the Earth were killed by the androids, aside from Goku, who had died naturally due to a heart virus before the arrival of the androids. Trunks provides Goku with an antidote for the heart virus. Goku spends the next 3 years training with Piccolo and Gohan, not showing any signs of illness. Goku trains Gohan in the room, knowing that his son was the only one with the power to truly ascend the Super Saiyan and defeat Cell.

Son Goku is a being with golden eyes who "slept on a rock" before he is found. He has no idea about either his race, his realm or his history. Although he has the mark of Gaea (from which Odin assumes he is a Vanir) he... exhibits various abilities coming from each race. He also exhibits an ability of plagiarism. He decides to stick around with Nataku's party regardless of their opinion and seemingly has gained the interest of various beings for reasons unknown.

If you're familiar with the previous Legacy of Goku title, you'll know that this is still an RPG adventure. This means there is still a great deal of leveling up and side quests to complete before you get to the major battles from the story. Upon starting, the game drops you into the role of Goku's son, Gohan. By playing through the game, you will eventually get free control of Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, Piccolo, and the secret character of Hercule once you hit the end and collect a few special trophies. All views aside, this is a game made for fans. So if you're a fan of the series, you'll be able to drop into the action smoothly and understand everything happening around you.
