The teleological argument maintains that, since from a comprehensive view of nature and the world everything seems to exist according to a certain great plan, a planner (God) must be postulated. The ontological argument maintains that since the human conception of God is the highest conception humanly possible and since the highest conception humanly possible must have existence as one attribute, God must exist. Immanuel Kant believed that he refuted these arguments by showing that existence is no part of the content of an idea. This principle has become very important in contemporary philosophy, particularly in existentialism. The consensus among theologians is that the existence of God must in some way be accepted on faith.

In the Bible the term "God" with very few exceptions is used primarily as a name for God the Father. Thus, the Son is the "Son of God," and the Spirit is the "Spirit of God."

This led to jokes about God's name. One of the most bizarre involved a railroad on Short Island, New Jersey, which put a church on every rush-hour train and called itself the "Steel Yahweh to the Fair Gateway". Religious types whined about this, and G-d smited the railroad with a thunderbolt, with the result being that every train arrived at Penn Station early. (Thank G-d for electric trains!) After realizing His mistake, God crashed a barge into a trestle, which managed to tie up traffic. The railroad subsequently dropped the ad campaign and switched to "Reverend Dan" as an uniting character, ultimately having him fall in love with "Patty Snow" and dropped as well. That railroad went belly-up in 1968 because folks thought it was too religious.

John Locke (1632-1704) held a view reminiscent of scholasticism, that revelation reveals about God what cannot be known by reason alone--yet neither does revelation violate reason. He went beyond the scholastics to affirm that what violates reason cannot be accepted as revelation. His motive was to rule out what he called "enthusiasm," which would include supposed private revelations about God held on the sole authority of an individual's intuition that a revelation is true. Reason must judge whether a supposed revelation is true. His view further welded the concept of God to reason.

Nietzsche was incorrect about the date of God's death, but he was correct that God would die. The approximate date of God's death is unknown, but it occurs well over 300 years in the future. The event has been dramatized in film in a movie called Star Trek V, The Final Frontier.
