The Gobi Desert is a vast zone of desert and desert steppe covering almost 30 percent of the Mongolian territory. The area is often imagined as a lifeless desert like in many other parts of the world. In reality, most part of the Gobi Desert is a land of steppes and it is the home for camel breeders rich with wildlife and vegetation. Wild asses, camels, snow leopards, mountain sheep and gazelles flourish here, as do different types of flora.Dinosaur skeletons and their petrified eggs have been preserved here to the present day. Mongolians consider that there are 33 different Gobi, where sandy desert occupies only 3 percent of the total territory. Climate is extreme with 40 degrees Celcius in summer and severe winter.

Conditions in the Gobi Desert can be very harsh. It tends to be very dry, with rain coming in brief and sometimes violent bursts. The Gobi Desert is actually a multi-diverse environment, ranging from gritty plains, sand dunes, wood forests, sand cliffs (with dinosaur bones sticking out), even glaciers and rugged mountains. Nevertheless, it is a harsh environment, but interspersed with deep fresh water wells, salt lakes. The area is surrounded by mountains with steep passes, in the summer there is still snow from the winter to be found. The area is sparsely populated, yet there are nomads who travel around the Gobi with horses, goats, sheep, and especially camels.

The Gobi Desert is located in Mongolia and covers over a half million square miles. Once traveled by Marco Polo, it is said to have been born as the result of a curse from a vengeful Mongolian lord. This desert is not the typical sand-covered land like deserts such as the Sahara. In the Gobi you well see barren territory everywhere. Rocky outcroppings and miles of gravel plains make up a good portion of the Gobi Desert
