Gobi Desert: Regions
built 661 days ago
While traveling across the Gobi desert visitors will encounter a wonderful variety of animal life. Roaming the desert are rare Saiga antelopes, snow leopards, wolves and ibex. The region is home to the Gobi bear, the only bear that lives in the desert. Wild asses, untamed horses, Bactrians (two-humped camels) and gazelles add to the wildlife. The Gobi Desert is the perfect vacation destination for nature lovers.
Although most people associate sand with deserts, the Gobi is not actually very sandy. Much of it consists of rock outcrops, gravel, and dirt, with scattered shrubs in some regions, especially those near the Kerulen River, which provides some water to parts of the Gobi Desert. Some regions do have large sandy dunes, and these often draw tourists and visitors, due to their isolation and natural beauty.

A large dust storm can be seen blowing across the Gobi Desert in Mongolia in this true-color Terra MODIS image from November 10, 2002. The dust storm appears as a lighter tan with horizontal-running streaks against the darker tan-orange of the desert. The dust storm is mostly in Mongolia (top), but ... has a streak running on the other side of the border in the Inner Mongolia region of China.
