The year is 1910 and, in an upscale London neighborhood, Mr. and Mrs. George Banks (David Tomlinson and Glynis Johns) are having trouble with their children Michael (Matthew Garber) and Jane (Karen Dotrice). Michael and Jane are in need of a new nanny, but they keep pushing away anyone the Banks’ might hire. Thankfully, Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) answers the ad for a nanny, and she is just the one to get the Banks children into shape. Mary arrives through the air with the aid of her umbrella and immediately takes the job, to the bewilderment of Mr. Banks and the amazement of the children.

Throaty-voiced, kittenish leading lady "Glynis Johns" was the daughter of British stage actor "Mervyn Johns"; she was born while her father and concert-pianist mother were on a tour of South Africa. Enrolled in the London ballet school at age 6, Johns had by age 10 progressed to the point that she was certified to teach ballet. At 12, she made her stage debut in the role of Napoleon's daughter in Saint Helena; at 13, she was cast in the pivotal role of the spiteful schoolgirl in the London production of "Lillian Hellman"'s "The Children's Hour". This led to her first film, 1937's "South Riding", in which she played another petulant, foot-stamping adolescent. Johns graduated to coquettish leading roles in the 1940s, most famously as the alluring mermaid in "Miranda" (1946).
Entertainer Hawkins (Kaye) and dashing Captain Jean (Glynis Johns) are assigned the task of delivering the baby to safety at a convent. When they encounter Giacomo (John Carradine), who describes himself as king of jesters and jester to kings, they knock him out and Hawkins takes his place in order to infiltrate Roderick's palace. Unknown to Hawkins, Giacomo is ... a skilled assassin, hired by the scheming Sir Ravenshurst (Basil Rathbone) to kill Roderick. There's also the Princess Gwendolyn (Angela Lansbury), who is being forced into a politically-important marriage with the grim Griswold of the North (Robert Middleton), but who really wants to escape her father's domination. And there's the witch Griselda (Mildred Natwick), who is forced to do Gwendolyn's bidding. Then Jean is captured and taken to the palace, entrusting the baby to a loyalist who works there.

When young Jane Lindstrom's (Glynis Johns) car breaks down, she makes her way to a somewhat frightening-looking mansion for help. Once there... her problems go from bad to worse: Dr. Caligari (Dan O'Herlihy), the owner of the house, begins taking Jane on a slow, tortuous descent into her psyche that makes her increasingly uncomfortable. Moreover, she is held in the house against her will, and no on in Caligari's household seems willing to help her escape. With its compelling, haunting soundtrack and unexpected plot twists, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari just might send you screaming to your psychotherapist, or, perhaps, running in the other direction.

Mervyn Johns Johns originally intended to practise medicine, but soon decided that he was not tough enough for the job and opted for acting instead. He won the Gold Medal and several other awards at RADA, but it took him a long time to build up his confidence. His career spanned six decades, during which he imbued all sorts of mild-mannered “little men” on stage and screen with an unexpected and affecting sincerity. The 1940s were his great stage period, when he played several roles in Shaw’s plays. Most of his memorable film roles were ... in the 1940s. His daughter was the juvenile star Glynis Johns.
