Glucosamine: Sugars
built 606 days ago
Glucosamine (C6H13NO5) is an amino sugar and a prominent precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids. A type of glucosamine forms chitin, which composes the exoskeletons of crustaceans and other arthropods, cell walls in fungi and many higher organisms. Glucosamine is one of the most abundant monosaccharides.[1] It is produced commercially by the hydrolysis of crustacean exoskeletons. Glucosamine is commonly used as a treatment for osteoarthritis, although its acceptance as a medical therapy varies.

Glucosamine appears to be a generally safe treatment, and has not been associated with significant side effects. A few case reports and animal studies raised concerns that glucosamine might raise blood sugar in people with diabetes but subsequent studies have tended to lay these concerns to rest. 34-39,48,49,52,58,60,69 Glucosamine does not appear to affect cholesterol levels either. 62

Glucosamine may increase the risk of excessive bleeding when it is taken with warfarin, other anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs, aspirin, or herbal products that reduce the blood’s ability to clot. Injecting it may ... increase blood sugar levels, thereby interfering with insulin and drugs or herbals that lower blood sugar.
