Glucosamine: Cartilages

Glucosamine is a substance called an amino glucose found in almost all human tissues. It is essential for the formation and repair of cartilage. Glucosamine is extracted from crab, lobster, or shrimp shells and incorporated into supplements.

Glucosamine was shown to be a structure (cartilage) regrowing drug. In rabbits, the lesions that simulated osteoarthritis were much smaller in the Glucosamine group and much larger in the group that received nothing (the control group).

Natural functions: Glucosamine taken orally performs all the functions that are associated with glucosamine that is naturally produced by the body. Hence, it aids in the formation of cartilages, tendons etc and at the same time prevents the formation of enzymes and chemicals that can cause harm to the cartilages.
Glucosamine is very promising for relief of arthritis pain and is backed by numerous double-blind, placebo-controlled studies. In these studies, glucosamine has been shown to rehabilitate cartilage and reduce the progression of osteoarthritis, and significantly lessen pain from arthritis.

It has been suggested that the availability of Glucosamine is the limiting factor in the biosynthesis of the GAG chain, and therefore, of the proteoglycan components of articular cartilage. If Glucosamine were readily available, it is thought, repair of cartilage would progress faster.
