Gloria Gaynor: City Life
built 299 days ago
In 1971, Gloria joined a house band in Newark, the Soul Satisfiers, and then formed her own group, City Life. They played the East Coast circuit, working nightclubs, supper clubs, and hotels, playing six shows a night, six nights a week. In eighteen months, she had just two weeks off.

In 1978, Gloria fell from the stage one night and injured her spine. She was in hospital for months and started to read her Bible regularly. But she did not really pause to consider who Jesus was. As her public life seemed to get better, her private life went downhill. She and husband Linwood started going to wild parties, and got into marijuana and cocaine. She tried to get out of it, but knew she could not break with it on her own. She felt guilty and was ashamed to go to church, or even pray to the God she thought she had known since a child.

If that isn't enough, Gloria has been compared to a modern day Audrey Hepburn. Her numerous charity events include the United Cerebral Palsy Organization, The Rita Hayworth Gala For Alzheimer's, Revlon's Annual Walk For Life, The Michael Bolton Foundation, and the list goes on. She's ... involved in helping underprivileged children in the inner-cities, inspiring them and teaching them to use their skills in overcoming the many challenges and obstacles that they face. Her humanitarian mission work has taken her all over the world to countries like Lebanon, Israel, Bosnia and other Slavic nations.

These days, Gaynor is unassuming about her own success. Able to enjoy a certain degree of anonymity in her daily life, she says she often doesnt even realize when people recognize her.
