Gloria Estefan: Essential Gloria Estefan

The 2006 release of The Essential Gloria Estefan satisfied a long unmet need for a careerspanning Englishlanguage retrospective, one that includes the singer's popular hits with Miami Sound Machine in the mid'80s as well as her subsequent solo recordings. For years, Estefan fans had few bestof choices to choose from the Spanishlanguage Exitos de Gloria Estefan (1990), the twovolume Greatest Hits series (1992, 2001), and the latterday Amor y Suerte: Exitos Romanticos collection (2004) with no alternatives, not even budgetline knockoffs. The longoverdue release of The Essential Gloria Estefan thankfully resolved this gripe, for it includes the hightlights from all aspects of Estefan's varied output, spread generously across two jampacked discs. (Well, it does exclude her bounty of Spanishlanguage recordings, the highlights of which can be found on Oye Mi Canto: Los Exitos, a singledisc retrospective released simultaneously. But at least there are some key inclusions here from the excellent Mi Tierra album from 1993 a fulllength that deserves to be heard in full, one could note.) Pretty much all the Miami Sound Machine hits are here, beginning with "Dr. Beat," as are all of Gloria's initial solo smashes from Cuts Both Ways (1989) and Into the Light (1991). Some of these songs are featured in their single versions, notably "Bad Boy" and "123," which is a good call in those cases, because these versions were the ones that became radio hits.

It's been about 30 years since Gloria first began her career as the lead vocalist for the Miami Sound Machine. Since then she has won five Grammys and sold more than 70 million albums worldwide. Her newest album, The Essential Gloria Estefan, is a collection of several of her greatest hits. "I always try to write things that are broad and keep things more wide so that people can identify and put their own lives into it," she says of her songwriting.

In October 2006, Sony released a 2-CD compilation The Essential Gloria Estefan featuring most of her biggest hits from 1984 to 2003. The album features an uptempo disc and a second disc of ballads. This compilation ... includes a special-internet view interview with Gloria in which she talks about every song featuring on the album.
