Glock's 9mm Parabellum pistol was first introduced to the American public by Soldier of Fortune Magazine almost eight years ago (See "Plastic Perfection," SOF, October '84). Since that time more than 350 U.S. local law enforcement and federal agencies have adopted or authorized the Glock as a duty weapon.

The Glock was modernized several times throughout its production history. In 1991 a modified version of the recoil spring and recoil spring tube was introduced that is now a single integrated recoil spring assembly that does not disassemble. Additionally the magazine was slightly modified (the magazine floorplate was changed and the follower spring was fitted with a resistance insert at its base) and the trigger pull was increased (optionally). The factory standard trigger is rated at 25 N, but by using a modified connector it can be increased to 35 N. In response to a request made by American law enforcement agencies for a two-stage trigger Glock introduced the so-called NY (New York) trigger module, which features a flat spring in a plastic housing that replaces the trigger bar’s standard coil spring. This trigger upgrade is available in two versions: New York and New York Plus that are rated at 34-40 N and 41-50 N respectively, which require approx. 20-30 N of force to disengage the safeties and another 10 N in the second stage to fire a shot.

(Inset) The magazine for the Glock Model 38 holds eight rounds of .45 GAP ammunition. Finger grooves are molded into the front of the grip section of the polymer Glock Model 38 frame. The Glock Model 38 follows the same size and design criteria as the previously seen Glock 19, Glock 23 and Glock 32.

The Virginia Tech shooter used a Glock 19 semi-automatic weapon and a Walther. In less than 10 minutes he fired approximately 170 bullets. In the face of such firepower, do even the most ardent technophiles really believe that quicker communication systems could deliver people to safety? Do those counting on the mental health system to provide a safety net lose confidence when they hear mental health professionals readily acknowledge their limited ability to predict violence?
