Gliding is one of the oldest air sports, and already saw some significant developments in the 20s. In 1929, gains of height in excess of 2500 metres had already taken place. The sport has come a long way since then, and today's machines are pushing all limits back. speeds over 230 km/h and distances of more than 2400 km have been flown recently, which gives you a flavour of the potential of the current gliders.

Gliding flights can be simple, local affairs or achieve great altitudes and distances. For instance, the world altitude record in a glider is more than 49 000ft. Distance flights of more than 1000 kilometres are normal. The world distance record currently stands at slightly more than 2000 kilometres.

Flying phalangers or wrist-winged gliders (subfamily Petaurinae) (gliding). Marsupials found in Australia, New Guinea, and Borneo. The gliding membranes are hardly noticeable until they jump. On jumping, the animal extends all four legs and stretches the loose but muscularly controlled folds of skin. The subfamily contains seven species. Of the six species in the genus Petaurus, the Sugar glider and the Biak glider are the most common species.

Be warned: to take up gliding is to enter a relationship with the sky that could easily turn into a love affair, an affair that could last the rest of your life.
