Glenn Miller: Bands
built 261 days ago
In 1937, Glenn Miller stepped out to form his own band. There were a few recordings -- one for Decca and one for Brunswick -- a couple of week-long stints in New Orleans and Dallas, and many one-nighters, but it was not to be. Though the group would play one more date several days later in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Glenn gave his men their final notice on New Year's Eve at the Valencia Ballroom in York, Pennsylvania. Broke, depressed and having no idea what he was going to do, he returned to New York City. It was during this disheartening interim, that he realized the unique sound -- produced by the clarinet holding the melodic line while the tenor sax plays the same note, and supported harmonically by three other saxophones -- just might be the individual and easily recognizable style that would set his band apart from all the rest.
The entire output of cigarette sponsored radio programs Glenn Miller did between 1939 and 1942 were recorded by the Glenn Miller organization on acetate discs. In the 1950s and afterwards, RCA-Victor distributed many of these on long playing albums and compact discs. A sizable representation of the recording output by the band is almost always in circulation by SONY/BMG Music, the successor labels to RCA-Victor and Bluebird. Glenn Miller remains one of the most famous and recognizable names of the big band era of 1935 to 1945.

Glenn Miller Glenn Miller was lost to the world of music when the band was re-assigned to Paris. Miller ever the meticulous leader, went ahead to sort out logistics. On December 15th 1944, Miller's flight left for Paris, only to disappear over the English Channel. He was officially pronounced dead a year later and was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star.
Major Glenn Miller (gmarmy.jpg 4845 bytes) Glenn Miller will be remembered for many things; his musical style, showmanship, hard work, perseverance, and much more. But his patriotism in giving up his number one civilian band to enlist in the United States Army Air Corps, his pioneering efforts to modernize military bands and his supreme sacrifice for his country have caused him to be remembered as Clarinda’s and America’s favorite musical patriot.

Glenn Miller Band As jazz based swing music swept across the nation in the late 1930's Glenn Miller's music appealed to a younger set of dancers and swing lovers and defined the music of the "bobbysoxers". The music's function was to get people on to the dance floor making Miller the leader of the most commercially successful dance band of all time. From 1939-1942 Miller dominated the charts and the dance floors with a string of big band and swing hits.
There, in less than one year, the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band engaged in over 800 performances. Of these, 500 were broadcasts heard by millions. There were more than 300 personal appearances including concerts and dances, with a gross attendance of over 600,000. But Glenn was not to participate in the final six months of these activities.
