In Buenos Aires, Argentina, small-time hood Johnny Farrell (Glenn Ford) is rescued from a robbery attempt by Ballin Mundson (George Macready). Mundson invites him to an illegal high-class casino, but warns him not to cheat there. Later, Farrell does exactly that, and two men take him to see the casino's owner, who turns out to be Farrell's benefactor. Farrell talks Mundson into hiring him and quickly earns his confidence. However, the snobbish washroom attendant, Uncle Pio (Steven Geray), keeps calling him "peasant."
