Glenn Ford: United States

Glenn Ford was far more than that, yet none of the obituaries bothered to mention his extraordinary patriotism or his distinguished military career. Ford rose to the rank of Captain in the United States Navy after years of dedicated service that began with World War II and continued through the Vietnam War.

Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford was born on May 1, 1916, in Quebec, the only child of Newton and Hannah Ford. The Fords, of Welsh descent, were prominent in Canada. Newton Ford was a railroad executive and mill owner and a nephew of Sir John MacDonald, a former prime minister of Canada. Another Ford ancestor was Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States.

At the beginning of World War II Glenn served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. As a Marine he helped build safe houses in occupied France for those hiding from the Nazis and was among the first Americans to enter the infamous Dachau concentration camp at war’s end. He went on to serve in the Navy and at war's end he was commissioned a Commander in the Naval Reserves.

The project is a remake of a 1957 Glenn Ford movie, which was itself based on a story by the much adapted Elmore Leonard. The 57 version follows a rancher named Dan Evans who is persuaded to escort a recently captured outlaw leader to the nearest train station where he'll be sent to Yuma for trial. The pair end up holed up in an old hotel and under siege. It actually sounds a lot like a cowboy version of 16 Blocks.

Slam-bang, laugh-packed classic Hollywood Western focuses on the rivalry between William Holden and Glenn Ford for the attention of Claire Trevor and a stake in the growing Lone Star State. George Marshall directs, and George Bancroft and Edgar Buchanan are along as well.
