Glenn Ford: Roles
built 633 days ago
From Rear Admiral Spruance in Midway to Julio Desnoyers in Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Glenn Ford was a strong dramatic presence. And yet, how could anyone overlook his more light-hearted roles in the comedy-drama Pocketful of Miracles (with Bette Davis), comedy-drama The Courtship of Eddie's Father (with Shirley Jones), the straight out comedy Imitation General (with Red Buttons), and a personal comedy favorite - Don't Go Near the Water?

In 1971, he starred in a weekly television series Cade's County which ended after a single season. Mr. Ford went on to star in another series, The Family Holvak (1975), and to host a syndicated documentary weekly, When Havoc Struck (1978). He ... headlined such miniseries as Once an Eagle (1976) and Evening in Byzantium (1979), and delivered a particularly strong performance as an Irish-American patriarch in the telefilm The Gift (1981). He continued appearing in choice theatrical-feature supporting roles into the early 1990s; one of the best of these was Clark Kent's foster father in Superman: The Movie (1978).

Some of his most notable Westerns were “3:10 to Yuma,” “Cowboy,” “The Rounders,” with Henry Fonda; “Texas,” with William Holden; “The Fastest Gun Alive,” with Jeanne Crain and Broderick Crawford; “Cimarron”, with Anne Baxter; and “The Sheepman,” with Shirley MacLaine. – but his acting talents ... ran to comedy and romance.

In 1978, Ford had a supporting role in Superman, as Clark Kent's adopted father, Jonathan Kent, a role that introduced Ford to a new generation of film audiences. Ford's final scene in the film begins with a direct reference to Blackboard Jungle - the earlier film's theme song "Rock Around the Clock" is heard on a car radio.
