Synopsis: Union Colonel Brackenby (Melvyn Douglas) and his second-in-command, Captain Heath (Glenn Ford), attempt to command a rather inept cavalry unit during the Civil War. Glenn Ford’s stardom now privileged him to work with bigger stars. First up was Pat O’Brien in FLIGHT LIEUTENANT, the story of a disgraced pilot (O’Brien) who struggles to keep his dark secret from the son (Ford) he deeply loves. O’Brien, the rough-talking, rapid-fire-delivery contemporary of fellow firecracker James Cagney, steals the show with charisma galore. And that’s okay because O’Brien is a pleasure to watch. Glenn Ford on the surface seems to take a step back in terms of his screen progress. But there is a respectful deference at work here.

The success of "Gilda" led to more important roles and Glenn became one of the most popular leading actors of the 1940s and 1950s. In 1947, he starred in "Framed", a noir film where he becomes involved with a femme fatale. In 1953, he had to opportunity to star in Fritz Lang's "The Big Heat" as a police officer. He ... starred in some important westerns, such as "The Fastest Gun Alive", "3:10 to Yuma", and "Cimarron".
Ford and Hayworth displayed a more convincing screen chemistry, though, and after Gilda they were reunited in The Loves of Carmen. Ford's career then once more fell on barren ground, with numerous pale parts in films such as The Undercover Man and The Redhead and the Cowboy. After The Big Heat, he worked again with Lang — and again opposite Gloria Grahame — in Human Desire, a not entirely convincing remake of La Bête Humaine.

Not limiting himself to Westerns, Ford appeared in many movies during his 53-year Hollywood career, appearing in 85 films. As television grew Ford adapted to the small screen as easily as he had to the big. He starred in the televised series’ “Cade’s County,” The Family Holvak” and several more specials and variety guest appearances.
