built 660 days ago
In 1908, the idea for an hotel at Gleneagles came to Donald Matheson, general manager of the Caledonian Railway Company. He had a dream to build a “Palace in the Glens” which would attract noble and wealthy railway travellers.
Gleneagles Hotel Gleneagles Hotel opened in 1924. The Hotel is a Five Red Star golf resort set in 850 acres of Perthshire countryside. The Hotel was designed in the style of a French chateau with landscaping inspired by Capability Brown.
The Gleneagles Hotel enjoys a wonderful hillside position overlooking Anstey's Cove and Redgate Beach. A 15-minute stroll from the hotel will take you to the heart of the town with the marina, harbour, bars, clubs and main shopping area.

When the hotel opened, the bright young things of the 1920s dubbed Gleneagles the ‘Riviera of the North’, adding a Scottish shooting trip to the society season. It was a pleasure palace far from the madding crowd, a perfect base for fishing, shooting, horse riding and Highland walking.
