Glaucoma: Open-Angle Glaucoma
built 652 days ago
Glaucoma is a vision-threatening disorder characterized by slow loss of optic nerve fibers. Susceptibility to this disease depends on a variety of factors including the level of pressure in the eye, a genetic tendency and older age. Glaucoma sometimes is caused by an abnormal buildup of a clear fluid called aqueous humor inside the eyeball. Normally drained away and replaced by the eye, the fluid is critical for bringing nutrients to the lens and cornea and removing waste material. When drainage channels become blocked, the increased pressure in the eye can damage the optic nerve. Glaucoma often develops slowly and painlessly (open-angle), or occasionally, suddenly and painfully (closed-angle).
Glaucoma Treatment in New Jersey Open-Angle Glaucoma This is the most common form of glaucoma, affecting over 70% of people that suffer from the disease. Open-Angle Glaucoma is usually caused by a slow buildup of blockage in the eyes drainage canals. Because this happens slowly over time, an undiagnosed case can slowly rob a patient of their vision with no noticeable symptoms.

If untreated, vision loss or blindness may occur. The information listed below is about open-angled glaucoma, the most common form of the disease.

Glaucoma is a group of disorders that affects the eye, leading to damage to the ganglion cells and their axons. This results in irreversible damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma represents one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in the USA and world-wide. There are a variety of glaucomas, most of which are asymptomatic until the late stages. The most common form of glaucoma is primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Early detection is the key to limiting damage from this insidious painless cause of vision loss.
Open Angle Glaucoma (OAG), occurs when there is an increase in fluid production or a decrease in fluid drainage. Over time, as the optic nerve fibers are destroyed, peripheral (side) vision is lost.
