Despite the long time since the last successful Roman-themed movie, GLADIATOR was a resounding success, both with critics and at the box office. Another result of this movie's success is that up and coming actor Russell Crowe was transformed into an A-list superstar. Ridley Scott described the experience as a film where everything just came together and ... said that his experience on GLADIATOR was the best one he's had in fifteen years. And despite the fact that the movie was released at the beginning of the summer blockbuster season, it still resonated enough throughout that year with voters that it won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Not bad for an old fashioned "sword and sandal" epic. Keep 'em coming, Hollywood, this movie proved that a well done Roman-themed movie still can draw quite an audience.

The huge success of Scott's film Gladiator (2000) has been credited with the revival of the nearly defunct genre of the "sword and sandal" historical epic. Scott then turned to "Hannibal", the sequel to Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs. 2001 ... saw the release of Scott's war pic, Black Hawk Down (2001), further establishing Scott's position as both a critically and financially successful film maker and went on to earn two Oscars.

In many ways, Gladiator should be seen more as entertainment than as a historical drama. Director Ridley Scott (White Squall, Blade Runner) clearly is using Roman characters in order to provide the level of entertainment he seeks, and basically eschews any historical accuracy to properly the stage for his grandiose mano-a-mano battles for power.

GLADIATOR was ... the Swan Song for the legendary character actor Oliver Reed. No stranger to historical pieces, Reed fits in very nicely in the ancient world and makes his last role a memorable one. Reed actually died before his scenes were finished; for Proximo's final scenes, Ridley Scott had to employ a double, replace that actor's face digitally with images of Reed and dub in dialog excerpts from material already recorded. It's a little obvious when this is employed but considering the circumstances, the digital wizards did a pretty decent job.
