Gladiator matches took place in ampitheatres (like the Flavian Ampitheatre or Colosseum) and were staged after the venationes (animal fights) and public executions (noxii). In its earliest forms, individuals of patrician or equestrian status organized these, often to gain political favor with the public. The organizer of any of these games was called the editor, munerator, or dominus and he was honored with the official signs of a magistrate. In the Imperial period, the Emperors were nearly solely responsible, excepting cases with special permission, for these all inclusive public ludi circenses, or "games".

Gladiator Sword Reproduction used by General Maximus as seen in the movie "Gladiator". These display replica swords are about 38 1/4" overall. These swords have a 29 5/8" unsharpened blade. Imitation plastic composite ivory handle with guard and ball pommel. Guard and pommel are adorned with silver highlights. Imitation leather wrapped wooden scabbard with black and silver highlights.

When the formerly-exiled Deathbird had usurped the Shi'ar throne from her sister Lilandra in a successful coup, Gladiator was forced to swear fealty to his new empress, even though his loyalties still lay with Lilandra. However, Gladiator's sense of duty saw him continue to serve as the Guard's praetor, despite his personal feelings about his new empress.

An assortment of Gladiator and Gladiatrix costumes are available in sizes to fit adults and children. Containing a short battle tunic with faux-leather accents and arm- and shin-guards, each costume can separately be accessorized with a gladiator sword and shield, or even a trident and net, one of the more unusual weapon sets utilized by these ancient warrior entertainers.

History: Nothing has yet been revealed about the origin of Gladiator, leader within the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, an army of superhumanly powerful beings from planets within the Shi’ar Galaxy that enforces Shi’ar Imperial law. Gladiator leads the elite corps of the Imperial Guard that protects and carries out the personal directives of the majestor or majestrix (emperor or empress) of the entire Shi’ar Galaxy.
