Giza: Pyramids
built 655 days ago
The pyramid, designed by Britto, is the artist's tribute to the Pyramids of Giza, the last remaining of the Ancient Seven Wonders of the World. To launch the Pyramid Project, 1,500 school kids from the UK, US, Belgium, France and Egypt painted panels for the pyramid alongside Britto. The Pyramid Project will culminate with the giant pop art pyramid travelling from the artist's studio in Miami to London to be unveiled at a ceremony in October. Details of the location of the giant pyramid will be revealed at a later date.

The pyramid was designed and hand-painted by Britto, creative director of the 2007 London Pyramid Project, as a tribute to the Pyramids of Giza, the last remaining of the Ancient Seven Wonders of the World. Located at historic Speakers' Corner, this is the first time the Royal Parks Service has permitted an art installation of such proportion to be placed in Hyde Park.

Well aware of the fabulous treasures found in other Egyptian Pyramids, the Arab Al Manun, in 820 A.D., forced his way into the Great Pyramid of Giza. Finding chisels to be of little value against such a large mass of limestone his men used the heat of fires and the thermal shock of pouring vinegar over the rock to fracture the stones. Large battering rams were used to break the fractured stones into removable pieces.

Khafre (2558-2532 BC) was the builder of the next great pyramid at Giza. The site of this pyramid is on a slight eminence and retains some of its limestone casing at the apex, and it therefore actually appears larger than that of Khufu, and is often mistaken as the Great Pyramid. In ancient times this pyramid was known as "Great is Khafre", and is more typical of Old Kingdom pyramid design in having an underground burial chamber.

The Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) was not only the first pyramid built at Giza but ... the largest. When completed, it stood some 480 feet tall and contained nearly 6.8 million tons of limestone. Nearby, three smaller pyramids were constructed for Khufu's queens.
