Giza: Pyramids

Giza is a variation of Pyramid. It is a totally open game (meaning that all cards are visible from the initial deal) which gives greater opportunity for strategy than Pyramid does. Giza was invented by Michael Keller.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and the only one still remaining to this day. The other wonders are: The Colossus of Rhodes, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Temple of Artemis (Diana) at Ephesus, and The Lighthouse of Alexandria.

The second largest pyramid at Giza belonged to Khufu's son Khafre (Chephren). Although Khafre's pyramid is shorter than that of his father, it appears taller due to the simple fact that it was constructed on higher ground.

The sides of all three of the Giza pyramids were astronomically oriented to be north-south and east-west within a small fraction of a degree. Among recent attempts [1] to explain such a clearly deliberate pattern are those of S. Haack, O. Neugebauer, K. Spence, D. Rawlins, K. Pickering, and J. Belmonte.

If you hear "Egypt" you think of them first: The three Pyramides of Giza. They are located about 10 km southwest of Cairo in the Libyan Desert. The biggest is ascribed to the pharaoh Cheops and is supposed to be built in the 4th dynasty about 2690 B.C. It is made from limestone from the Mokattam Mountains near Cairo. Its height is 140 m and its lateral length 230 m. The second is suppost to be built by pharaoh Chefren about 2650 B.C. and its height is 136 m. The smaller one with a height of 63 m is supposed to be built by pharaoh Mykerinos about 2600 B.C.

All the pyramids can be seen from thirty miles from Giza itself. The site is truly spectacular. The walls are covered in fabulously incised hieroglyphics. From the outside, if you are standing right next to the pyramid, you will not be able to see the top. It is a pity to see that the Great Pyramids are in danger because of its neighbor, the ever-growing metropolitan city of Cairo. The pollution is causing the pyramids and the Great Sphinx to slowly deteriorate.
