Gilmer Bryan "Gil" Morgan, born September 25, 1946, at Wewoka, Oklahoma, proved a consistent Professional Golf Association (PGA) golfer for twenty-three years, and an instant success in the Senior PGA tour. Not offered a college scholarship after high school, Morgan attended East Central University in Ada. He joined the college golf team his junior year, achieving honorable mention All-American honors his senior season. In 1972 Morgan earned a doctor of optometry degree at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, but never practiced the occupation because he turned to professional golf after graduation.
Gil Morgan "That's not too First Tee-ish," Gil Morgan joked about his two-stroke victory over Hale Irwin -- who ... prevailed at Pebble Beach GL in 2005 when he was 60 -- in an event that highlights the potential of youth. The prince of the younger set was 17-year-old Harold Varner of Gastonia, N.C., who birdied three of the last four holes Sunday to win the pro-junior division by four shots with Morris Hatalsky. "He's a wonderful young man, and it was a privilege to play with him," said Hatalsky. "Besides the fact that he is a very talented golfer, he has a wonderful head on his shoulders."
