Gidget was the prototypical beach bunny. Though 18-year-old Sally Field defeated 75 other teenage girls for the title role, she exaggerated her surfing experience. The young actress had none and took lessons just to be able to pretend to surf for the cameras.

Gidget was a television sitcom that aired from September 15, 1965 to August 31, 1966 on ABC. It starred Sally Field as Francine Lawrence, teenage character adapted from 1959 film. Francine is her first name but her surfing friends call her Gidget. It is written as a sequel to three Gidget films.
