Gibraltar: British Bulldog
built 267 days ago
During the many years that Gibraltar was a British fortress, most of the area was taken up by military installations, and the civilian population was kept small. Many of the laborers lived in the Spanish border town of La Línea. The population now consists of people of Spanish, Italian, English, Maltese, Portuguese, German, and North African descent. More than three quarters of the population is Roman Catholic; there are Protestant, Muslim, and Jewish minorities. English is the official language, and Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese are spoken.

On 1 January 1907, the Gibraltar Post Office ceased to have responsibility for the British postal service in Morocco, but Gibraltar stamps and postal stationery remained valid until 28 February 1907. This postcard from Fez was used on the last day of its validity.
The iconic view of fraggle rock from Spain The people of Gibraltar are possibly the most confused people in existence, or have ever existed. They talk to each other in Spanish and prefer paella to proper British food like Curry. However they scorn the Slops, otherwise erroneously named the Spanish, and the Giris, ie anyone else not from Gibraltar. Considering that Gibraltar itself is made up of immigrants from the last three hundred years, it is a somewhat ridiculous position. Fraggle Rock and it´s hangers on ... expect everything for nothing, having been cacooned from birth from the outside world, and spoilt rotten by their mothers. Whatever you do when visiting Fraggle Rock, for God's sake don't try to chat up any Fraggle women.
German historical map of the promontory of Gibraltar. The culture of Gibraltar reflects Gibraltarians' diverse origins. While there are Andalusian and British influences, the ethnic origins of most Gibraltarians are not confined to British or Andalusian ethnicities. Most ethnicities include Genoese, Maltese, Portuguese, and German. A handful of other Gibraltar residents are Jewish of Sephardic origin, North African, or Indians.
On the 19th and 20th of January 2008 many familiar areas around Gibraltar were transformed into scenes from the Second World War. Experienced re-enactment groups fully equipped with authentic German and British uniforms took part in the filming of a documentary about Operation Felix, Hitler's ill-fated plan to seize Gibraltar in 1941. The plan was never implemented for a number of political and military reasons at that time... most historians believe that Gibraltar would have fallen to Germany if the operation had gone ahead. The documentary is being produced by Martin Nuza for Gold Productions Studios.
