New tests that detect antigens (proteins) to Giardia in feces are especially useful for screening children in day-care settings, and for testing adults after treatment. Because of the high accuracy of the antigen tests, it is now rarely necessary to have an intestinal biopsy of the jejunum (part of the small intestine).

Occasionally, treatment fails to eradicate Giardia. In such cases, the drug may be changed or a longer duration or higher dose may be used. Combination therapy ... may be effective (e.g., quinacrine and metronidazole).

Feather picking associated with giardia may resolve after treatment... it may return from time to time. This can be very aggravating, and other methods may need to be employed to control feather picking, in addition to treating the giardia itself.
