Giardia: Giardia Protozoa
built 642 days ago
The life cycle of Giardia is still somewhat of a mystery. Scientists do know that the trophozoites encyst at some point, and that the cysts are passed into the environment when the dog defecates, but the exact timing and mechanism are not yet known. It is ... unclear whether the protozoans are a single species or several species, each with a specific host. Suffice to say, however, that Giardia is an equal opportunity disease that infects several species of animals, including humans. Thus the presence of cysts in the environment can trigger an outbreak in people as well as pets. Cysts can remain viable for several weeks or months in cold, wet environments, so areas littered with feces should be avoided and piles should be removed from backyards.

Giardia lamblia (synonymous with Lamblia intestinalis and Giardia duodenalis) is a flagellated protozoan parasite that colonises and reproduces in the small intestine, causing giardiasis. The giardia parasite attaches to the epithelium by a ventral adhesive disc, and reproduces via binary fission[1]. Giardiasis does not spread via the bloodstream, nor does it spread to other parts of the gastro-intestinal tract, but remains confined to the lumen of the small intestine[2]. Giardia trophozoites absorb their nutrients from the lumen of the small intestine, and are anaerobes.

Giardiasis is an infection of the small intestine caused by the flagellated protozoan Giardia Lamblia, a one-celled, microscopic parasite that lives in the small intestine of people and animals. The parasite is passed in the stool of an infected person or animal. The parasite is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside the body and in the environment for long periods of time. Giardiasis is very contagious.

Giardia intestinalis is a protozoan parasite that infects the gastrointestinal tract of vertebrate hosts. Giardia intestinalis (... called giardia duodenalis or giardia lamblia) is one of the most common intestinal parasites in the world and it contributes to diarrhea and nutritional deficiencies in children in developing regions. Although Giardia do not contain mitochondria, they have developed pathways to perform some mitochondrial functions. Giardiasis in poorly nourished children in developing regions can lead to stunting and cognitive impairment.

Giardia is a protozoa parasite affecting the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. They are shed in feces in the form of an cyst. This protozoa can remain dormant for long periods in the cyst form. It becomes active upon entering a host.

Giardialamblia, often referred to simply as “Giardia”, the causative agent of giardiasis, is a flagellated protozoan that was originally observed by Van Leeuwenhoek in 1681. The genus name of this parasite was named after French biologist Alfred Giard.
