Giardiasis is caused by Giardia lamblia, a one-celled, microscopic parasite that lives in the intestines of people and animals. Infected people and animals pass Giardia cysts in their stool. Giardia cysts can survive in the environment in water and food and on surfaces and objects.

Giardia is found worldwide and infects humans as well as domestic and wild animals (e.g., cats, dogs, cattle, deer, and beavers). Giardia is found in soil, food, water, or surfaces that have been contaminated with the feces from infected humans or animals. One can become infected after accidentally swallowing the parasite, but one cannot become infected through contact with blood. Giardia lamblia does not invade the tissues of the small intestine, but instead adheres closely to the lining of the small intestine, and in heavy infections much of the lining of the small intestine can be covered with trophozoites (see image below from ThePetCenter.com). The parasites swim free and rapidly in a spiral motion in the intestinal lumen but ... attach, via their adhesive disc, to the intestinal epithelium.

Giardia infection is caused by the parasite Giardia intestinalis (... called Giardia lamblia). The parasite is found worldwide but is especially prevalent in countries with poor sanitation and unsafe water, where it's responsible for most cases of childhood diarrhea.

Giardia lamblia is a one-celled parasite capable of causing severe abdominal symptoms when ingested, usually through contaminated food or water. It can ... be transmitted to others via poor handwashing technique, particularly after changing diapers or using restroom facilities. The parasite is often referred to as “cute” because of its characteristic long flagella and two prominent bodies, giving the appearance of “eyes.”

Giardia lamblia, the parasite causing giardiasis, lives in two stages: trophozoites and cysts. Trophozoites are the active form of the parasite inside the body. Cysts represent the resting stage that enables the parasite to survive outside the body.
