built 185 days ago
The three great masters of the Baroque in Rome were Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Francesco Borromini, and Pietro da Cortona. Bernini... a brilliant sculptor, designed both the baldachin (an ornamental canopy-like structure) with bronze spiral columns over the grave of St. Peter (162433) and the vast enclosing colonnade (begun 1656) that forms the piazza of St. Peter's.

Bernini's activity as a painter was a sideline which he did mainly in his youth. Despite this his work reveals a sure and brilliant hand, free from any trace of pedantry. He studied in Rome under his father, Pietro, and soon proved a precocious infant prodigy. His work was immediately sought after by major collectors.

GIOVANNI LORENZO BERNINI was, in the assessment of Janson (History of Art, p. 410), the greatest sculptor-architect of the 17th century. He began his career as a student of his father Pietro Bernini (1582-1629), a sculptor who had himself worked at one time with Camillo Mariani.
