Ghosts: People
built 237 days ago
The Ghosts of Ohio ... offers a series of presentations that allow people to get a first-hand look inside the world of scientific ghost research. These presentations give audience members the chance to learn about the nature of ghosts, try out paranormal-investigation equipment, have their questions answered, and hear hair-raising tales of hauntings in their own backyard. More information about presentations can be found here.
Ghosts have been known to interact with the living or just make acknowledgment with a quick glance or eye contact. In other accounts the ghost seems unaware of the presence of living people and appears to be acting out some part of their own life.
Some ghost researchers approach the possibility of ghosts from a more scientific standpoint, seeking to find correlations and causal relationships between recordable phenomena and the supposed presence of ghosts. Those who follow this approach most often believe that ghosts are not actual disembodied souls or spirits, but rather they are impressions of psychic energy left behind by a deceased (or in some rare cases, still living) person. They assert that traumatic events (such as a murder or suicide) cause mental energy to be released into the world, where it may be experienced by other people who are sensitive to its presence. This way of thinking classifies ghosts in the same category of preternatural unexplained phenomena as poltergeists/telekinesis, ESP, and telepathy. Theories from this approach often encounter difficulties in explaining ghosts that appear to be sentient, such as those which answer questions or react to specific actions from people present. However, it may be possible that enough of a dead person's psyche might be imprinted on an environment so as to give the likeness of thought or autonomy.

In the Celtic tradition, it was believed that many ghosts were friendly, coming back in the form of animals, including crows and cats. " Ghosts in the form of people, such as those we see in movies, are a contemporary phenomenon, " Broedel says. " All except the grumpiest, scariest medieval ' ghosts' who were called ' revenants' and were the animated corpses of the returning dead." Witches were a 15th-century creation and at first took the form of their " familiars" -cats, bugs and toads. The notion of a witch as a woman who flies through the night, with the big hat, green face and evil agenda is relatively recent folklore.

These kinds of ghosts may be the most common. These spirits usually appear shortly after their deaths to people close to them. They are aware of their deaths and can interact with the living. They most often bring messages of comfort to their loved ones, to say that they are well and happy, and not to grieve for them. These ghosts appear briefly and usually only once. It is as if they intentionally return with their messages for the express purpose of helping the living cope with their loss.
Ghosts of England & Belgrave Hall - DVD. It is a mistake to suppose that all ghosts are of people. There is a well-known case of a ghostly bus which was said to run on a London route (see Phantom Bus). The ghost of a bombed house has been seen, standing on the site it once occupied. Ghostly clothing, letters, money, even machinery has appeared. Ghostly animals have sometimes been seen — or heard, without any human apparitions. Interestingly, ghost cats seem almost always to appear alone, while ghost dogs more usually appear in ghostly human company (a reflection of living canine and feline characteristics, perhaps).
