People wanted to make money with ghost photography so they started selling fake ones. P.T. Barnum, the circus man, showed how the pictures could be faked, so William Mumler was arrested for fraud and put on trial. This trial was very famous and lots of people came to see it and newspapers had stories on it. William Mumler was found innocent, and he swore that his pictures were real even if other people’s weren’t, but people didn’t trust ghost photography after that.

Prior to the invention of the computer and digital photography, authentic ghost photographs were very rare, and were subject to the slings and arrows of merciless critics from all quarters. It was easy for skeptics to maintain trickery was involved and difficult or impossible for those accused of trickery to disprove the accusations.
For those interested in ghost photography, the Internet will provide a plethora of websites dealing with this subject. Some are openly sensationalist, others more thoughtful. Many provide tips on how to use the camera as a ghost hunting tool and deal with quite technical aspects such as which kind of film to use, the correct exposure and the most successful printing techniques. Obviously, ghosts in photographs do exist and the field is much wider as illustrated in the "ghost effect" image above. Ghost were a normal occurrence in early 19th. Century photographs due to long exposure times.

A rash of new "ghost" photographs is plaguing the Western world. It is instructive to note that in each of the cases I have related, including the six examples in Fate magazine, no one saw anything out of the ordinary but simply discovered the anomalous shapes when the photos came back from the film processors.

There are many photographs claimed to be ghostly or paranormal, whether intentionally faked or mistakenly analyzed by someone who really wants to see something. Be a skeptic, and when in doubt do not count a photograph as paranormal.
