Ghana is generally characterized by flat plains and gently rolling hills. Forests cover 24 percent (2005) of the country’s area, while 28 percent (2003) of its area is farmed. The country is divided into five distinct geographical regions. Coastal plains stretch across the southern portion of the country, featuring low sandy beaches interspersed with saltwater lagoons. A forested plateau region consisting of the Ashanti uplands and the Kwahu Plateau is located inland, in southwest and south central Ghana. The hilly Akwapim-Togo Ranges run north to south along the country’s eastern border.

About 11 percent of the population of Ghana is classified as undernourished by the World Bank. This means they do not receive adequate nutrition in their diet. Of children under the age of five, about 27 percent are underweight, and more than one-quarter are stunted (short for their age). Goiter (a swelling of the thyroid gland) was present in one-third of all school children between 1990 and 1995. This is usually a sign of an iodine deficiency. However, Ghanaians consume a fairly large amount of yams, which contain Vitamin B1 (thiamin) and Vitamin C. Vitamin B1 helps the body use energy foods and Vitamin C helps to keep the body tissues strong and helps the body to use iron.

Ghana's distinguishing geographic feature is the Volta River, on which was built the Akosombo dam in 1964. The damming of the Volta created the enormous Lake Volta, which occupies a sizeable portion of Ghana's southeastern territory.

The December 2000 elections ushered in the first democratic presidential change of power in Ghana's history when John A. Kufuor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) defeated the NDC's John Atta Mills--who was Rawling's Vice President and hand-picked successor. Kufuor defeated Mills by winning 56.73% of the vote, while the NPP picked up 100 of 200 seats in Parliament. The elections were declared free and fair by a large contingent of domestic and international monitors. After several by-elections were held to fill vacated seats, the NPP majority stood at 103 of the 200 seats in Parliament, while the NDC held 89 and independent and small party members held eight.

Ghana's population is composed of many ethnolinguistic groups, the principal of which are the Akan (Ashanti and Fanti), Mole-Dagbani, Ewe, and Ga-Adangme. English is the official language. According to the 2000 census 69% of the population is Christian and 16% is Muslim (living mainly in the north), with the remainder following traditional religions, but those figures are disputed by Muslim organizations in Ghana.

From the beginning of the tournament, Ghana failed to convince many, especially in terms of goal scoring prowess. The team’s best assets were their midfield, which is mainly powered by Michael Essien, and their defense, which is captained by the redoubtable John Mensah. Unfortunately, due to Mensah’s red card against Nigera, Ghana were dealt a double blow. It wasn’t just the absence of Mensah in the back line - it was Essien’s absence from midfield (he was put in central defense).
